Is Photojournalism Art?

Jennie Ross Cobb 1896

Quality of Light:

This image was taken during the mid day, and it has great lightening. It is engaging because it is not too bright and not too dark. The lightening give off dimension on the water and the trees allowing the viewer to feel like they are there in person.

In or out of focus:

Since this image is dated its hard to see the faces of the individuals in the water. Even though this photo is not as sharp as photos now a days, you are still able to feel the overall effects of happiness and joy just from looking at the happy image.

Contrast Appropriate:

The contrast in this image is amazing. As mentioned above it gives dimension in the water and in the tree. When you see darker spots in this image it shows the detail in that area. For example in the tree, thee darker spots are the open gaps with no leaves. For the reflection of the tree on the water shows that the sun is still out and that it is a nice day.

Why I Chose This Image:

I chose this image because of the background to it. I first looked up photographs that were taken before the 1900’s and many of great photos came up. However a came across and image that I did not end up using but I went to the cite that image was on and that is where I came across all of Cobbs’s images. She was the first women photographer and I thought that was extremely special expecially when viewing her images.

Subject’s Expression:

The little boy in this photo is relaxed and posing for the camera. He doesn’t look like he is overly posed for the photo, it looks to me like he chose to stand like this and to make the straight face he is making. His body language I think fits his facial expression.  I looks like he is trying to show off that he is the man of the house.

Texture:

You can see the texture in the stone steps and in the flower vase. Jennie Cobb did a great post with the framing of this photo because you are able to see the little boy clearly but you are able to see the texture of the things in the background.

Is the image black & white or color?

This photo was taken in 1901, with no color to it. It is completely black and white, which Cobb did not have a choice for color due to the year it was taken.

Why I Chose This Image:

This image is from the same photographer as above, I chose this image because most of her images are of her family and all the memories that they have. This one in particular is her Nephew on the steps of a home. I loved this image because it tell the viewers that they are a fun happy family who love to take funny and memorable images.

What feelings does the image create?

When I look at this image, I just think to myself “wow”.  This image can have many different feelings towards it. Some may view it as a cool image that many people may only see once in their lives, or people may see it as a scary and petrifying image.

Background compliments or detracts from composition

The background of this image is the bigger picture. It is the subject of the photo and it is what hold the power. This photographer did a great job at capturing these individuals in this moment because it still shows that it is still safe for most to go outside into this air.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

This image is not overpowering with different thing jammed into the photo. When you think of New York City you think of a lot of people. This photographer did a nice job at not overpowering the image and limited 2 subjective to the image.

Why I Chose This Image:

I chose this image because it was a recent event where it effected many state and countries. This is a picture if New York City covered in smoke over the summer of 2023 from the Canadian wild fires. This was a sad event that happened however I think this is an extremely powerful image. Not many times in our lives can we get an image like this.
